A new contact of mine actually alerted me to this event and since it fits within my career path, I thought it best to engage. I'm curious if there are other networking events related to this event but perhaps occurring currently. I'm interested in getting involved and learning about others' experience in the Product Management space. Ideas?

Dear PMC members,
The PMC board is working on the definition of the next social media event. As you may recall, the PMC has hosted two events thus far. For a copy of the webinar from June, please use the following link: http://www.slideshare.net/dansears/a-social-media-framework-for-b2b-product-managers-and-marketers.
The PMC board is proposing the following three ideas and would like your feedback:
1. How to develop a social media plan and budget;
2. What social media tools to use based on y…

I'd like to thank everyone who attended our first webinar last week. The questions were insightful and directly in line with our intent for this session. I'd also like to thank our guest presenters for their valuable contributions of time, content and insight. Without their participation, I feel the webinar would've been less interesting and possibly less useful as an learning tool. Personally, it was a fun learning experience to work with them in crafting this deck.
While we aimed to develop a…

Warren Buffet tells us that price is what you pay, value is what you get. As product managers, our job is to create and sustain value in our product and service offerings for both our company and our customers. At first, this sometimes seems like an impossible task.
The puzzle looks something like this: The company needs to sells a certain number of units at a set gross profit within a defined period of time; the market needs to buy at the lowest price possible to still meet their needs and dea…

In today's global, 24/7 world, time-to-market is a key strategic factor. 40% of the major American corporations that existed in 1975 do not exist today (source: Winning at New Products, Robert G. Cooper). Windows of opportunity are smaller, and more crowded, than ever before with more companies trying to get to market with new and innovative products. SPEED IS THE PIVOTAL COMPETITIVE WEAPON. Yes, I'm "shouting" this. It's all about speed. Sort of.
This shouldn't be translated into speed at all…

In his article,
Social Media Marketing: Marketing and Operations Take Another Step Closer, Dave Evans, ClickZ writes:
For the past 5 to 10 years, it could be explained by what's now called social media. Consumers have been steadily chipping away at a marketer's ability to influence a mass audience. First, it was fragmentation: Jim Stengel, former Proctor & Gamble CMO, noted that in the mid-'60s, 80 percent of all U.S. adults could be reached wi…

Sorting through the cacophony of feature requests to determine which one(s) come next, which come after that and which ones never get done is one of the most challenging aspects of product management. Product Managers are lobbied, bribed, bullied and threatened to include this sales manager's pet feature or this developers bright idea. Big, valuable customers demand changes. Market leaders bring out new versions and you immediately want to hit back.
After the dust settles and the lobbying and h…

Every day we hear about sustainability. Mostly the discussions revolve around energy, the environment, agriculture and building green. The principles of sustainability though are equally applicable to products, product lines and companies.
Whether you consider
the Hannover Principles, established for the 2000 World's Fair in Hannover, or the

I don't know about you, but I'm seeing articles, webinars and blog postings touting the need to 'reinvent ourselves' during these challenging economic times. Maybe we don't really need to reinvent so much as simply do what good product managers do and take stock of our products, our markets, our customers and our resources and build a growth plan that works for today's reality. Or maybe reinvention is called for and we as product managers and product marketers have to lead the way.
The idea of…

I have bounced back and forth in my career between Product Management and Project Management. This is further complicated by the use of (and differences with) Program Management.
Some time ago I saw a blog post that I think does a generally good job at drawing the distinction,
product-management-vs-project-management.
I refer to it occasionally, especially in situations like my current one wher…

In this energizing session, we gained new insights into requirements definition, whether in a self-funded start-up or a large, well-funded organization. Two requirements experts discussed how they have succeeded in defining and building customer-focused products. Both were passionate about the user experience and provided insights into how to retain this focus while delivering the requirements. The speakers were:
